I love to draw monsters – pulled from folklore or cryptids of my own creation. Although each creature is a horror, I don’t draw them committing horrifying acts. Instead, they are simply living their lives at the fringes of society, or preferably hidden deep in the woods. With the monsters comfortable in their home turf, the viewer – or any humans unlucky enough to find themselves in the creature’s presence – may feel like an intruder, or a fellow monster if they so choose.
In my ink work, I strive to create a feast of detail meant to be enjoyed from a distance or with your nose hovering a centimeter from the page. I’m inspired by the meticulously-detailed book and serial illustrations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as the work of more contemporary comic book artists. The result is a blend of delicate hatching and the sort of swooping, weighted lines often reserved for a superhero’s cape.
